How to Survive Winter: Nutrition for the multi-dimensional Pilates teacher who needs energy to do it all
Friday, Feb. 20: 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Instructor: Jena La Flamme
Unlike sedentary desk jobs, being a Pilates instructor requires being constantly energized, as you are now a role model for looking and feeling great. In this workshop you will learn which foods will help you be able to rise to this challenge, even in the middle of winter. This workshop outlines “Performance Eating,” time-efficient nutrition solutions that fuel the high energy your multi-dimensional career and Pilates Diva lifestyle demands.
Jena La Flamme is the founder and director of the Jena Wellness Center in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. She is a certified Holistic Health Counselor, workshop leader, professional speaker, yoga instructor, published columnist, and stars in weekly episodes of her own wellness show on the GoWellness channel of www.podcastgo.com. Her work guides clients in addressing weight loss, low energy and other health concerns through a fun, easy and pleasurable approach to nutrition and lifestyle choices.
Decompress Your Spine & Life
Friday, Feb. 20: 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Instructor: Kelly Kane
Low back pain is often the result of compression; compression from gravity, internal physical restrictions, sedentary lifestyles and stress from modern living. As Pilates professionals, how do we facilitate our clients' and our own decompression? In this workshop we will look at the compressive forces that affect the low back and look at some real tools to facilitate decompression in the lumbosacral region. We will also review the basics of pelvic assessment and explore a new protocol of Pilates exercises to correct pelvic imbalances. We will explore how to literally decompress the lumbar spine through breathing exercises and learn to lengthen and strengthen the psoas and iliacus, mobilize the posterior abdominal fascia and ultimately help ourselves and our clients find balance in their SI joints through an exploration of mobilizing and unleashing compression in the body.
Kelly Kane, PMA Certified, has been teaching the work of Joseph Pilates for 17 years. Originally Kelly studied the method with Romana Kryzanowska and Hila Paldi and obtained her certification through the Pilates Institute in Santa Fe, N.M. Kelly Kane opened The Kane School of Core Integration in New York City in 1999. Her teacher-training programs are singular in their emphasis on teachers developing their anatomy knowledge and palpatory skills.
LifeLong Pilates & The Body
Saturday, Feb. 21: 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Instructor: Mary Bowen
In this workshop, Mary teaches and demonstrates the importance of release in Pilates work. There is effort and there is release; one is as important as the other. Effort is known and experienced more than release. Mary introduces numerous new release exercises and attitudes, especially for the spine. Her aim is for the Pilates student to find a greater partnership between mind and body.
Topics that will be discussed and worked on:
• Less Effort/More Release and How Aging Can Improve Your Pilates Practice
• Less Performance/More Experience
• More Spine/Less Mind
• Breathing: Animal Plus Human
• Chronic Tension Patterns in the Body
Mary Bowen, Pilates Elder, PMA Gold Certified, introduced Pilates Plus Psyche to the Pilates community seven years ago. It's a combination approach to teaching developed over her 34 years of teaching Pilates and 39 years of practicing as a Jungian psychoanalyst. Mary’s background in Pilates goes back 50 years; she studied with Joe and Clara Pilates for six and a half years, followed by seven-year cycles with Bob Seed, Romana Kryzanowska, Kathy Grant, Bruce King and Jean Claude West (to whom she introduced and taught the Pilates Method), and since 1995 with Christine Wright, all in NYC. For 49 years Mary has taken her own weekly Pilates lesson with the above master teachers. This achievement Mary regards as one of the most important sources of her deep understanding and evolving distillation of the Pilates Method.
Pilates Details: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Exercises, Redefined!

Phoebe Higgins, PMA Gold Certified, studied and performed with the School of American Ballet, Simonson technique of Jazz Dance and Kevin Wynn Collection, among others. From 1967-68 Phoebe also attended ballet classes taught by Romana Kryzanowska. Phoebe was reintroduced to Romana in 1976 and began studying the Pilates Method to help strengthen a spine weakened by scoliosis. In 1980 Phoebe went to work at the Pilates Studio under Romana's guidance. When that studio closed in 1989 she began work with Dr. Howard Sichel in his chiropractic office. That work evolved into Power Pilates. In 2006, Phoebe left Power Pilates and became a freelancer for both individual sessions and workshops.
Peter Roel, co-owner of Pilates Shop Yoga Garage in Manhattan, opened his company in 2001 with his wife, Maxine Roel. Prior to opening his company, Peter was co-director and teacher trainer at Power Pilates for two years and had a highly successful dance career for 20 years. Peter has been practicing Pilates since 1984 with Kathleen Stanford Grant and was certified by Romana Kryzanowska in 1994.
